Our commitment to patient care is reflected in our active, progressive pharmacy. The Department of Pharmacy at Mercy Medical Center provides services through a centralized pharmacy and clinical patient care services. Our pharmacists are available on all patient care units to help answer medication-related questions from our staff or from the patients and their families. Our goal is to be an advocate of quality patient care. We achieve this goal through cooperation with physicians, nurses and other health care providers within the hospital.

The pharmacy department provides a wide range of services to our patients, medical staff, nursing staff and other clinical departments. A restricted Hospital Formulary approved by the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee and the Medical Staff is utilized within the hospital as a cost avoidance tool. Acquisition of medications can have a significant cost implication, however their safe and effectiveness use is paramount. The pharmacy takes pride in its responsibility for:

1- Quality for procurement of all medications,
2- Preparation and management of all medications
3- Control and security of all medications
4- Control and cost avoidance measures for medication expenditures
5- Monitoring and utilization review of medication use
6- Evaluation of drug literature and the communication of drug and disease-related information
7- Application of professional and scientific principles in the selection, use, administration and monitoring of safety and effectiveness for all patients.

The pharmacy department maintains a complete and comprehensive computerized patient profile on all patients. A unit dose distribution system is used throughout the hospital with computerized dispensing cabinets to improve patient safety and security of the medication process. Clinical consultations are provided for patients and physicians as requested.

Our clinical pharmacy services demonstrate a unique blend of professional challenges and commitment to excellence that makes pharmacy an integral component of the health care team. The pharmacy department provides comprehensive leadership within the hospital for all matters of drug therapy. It is the mission of the pharmacy to excel in the provision of pharmaceutical care to patients and our community.

Employment Information:

The pharmacy operates a 24-hour computerized unit dose distribution system with a comprehensive IV admixture service. The pharmacy has been proactive in developing an automated medication distribution system to provide cutting edge point of care technologies. A new process of bar coding medications is one in a multi-step process focusing on patient safety and to streamline the medication process.
